scene: As a young boy I was sitting in the living room of my Great Gramndparents old homestead in Fosterville N.B. gazing at a picture of my Great Great Grandfather the father of Ward Foster my Great Grandfather. My imagination ran wild and this is the song I wrote as a result. Sittin on my own in Grandma's parlour, Wing back chairs with pillows attached. Lookin at a picture of my Great grandfather, Stone cold eyes and moustache waxed. He's got the face of a Turkish warlord, Fightin a cause for a noble class. Standin tall for law and order, Like the rainfall feeds the grass. Or was he a pirate on the Spanish main, Callin out orders from the captain's loft. Dancin to the fire of a thousand flames, Fightin for booty illegally sought. He's got the face of a pirate of fame, Drinkin to the plunder of battles fought, Crossin cold steel to honour his name, From tales of yore a splendid plot. Like the mystery in the wind His true spirit never ends Like all sources he survives In the shiftin sands of mother time. and if you listen he's alive In every newborn baby's cry. Or was he a cowboy on the open range, Where the wind rushes through the golden grass. Taming a mustang with a flowing mane, Tales by the campfire bragging his past. He's got the face of a Texas Ranger, Fightin for freedom in a frontier land. Ridin long hours in the face of danger, With a heart of truth that makes a man. Or was he a politician in his own right, A public orator callin the shots. A democratic pioneer with pure insight, On how his country should be taught. He's got the face of a verbal dodger, Talkin up proud in the public eye, With humour and wit a willy old codger. A pure avenger with gracious pride. Like the mystery in the wind his true spirit never ends. Like all sources he survives in the shifting sands of mother time. and if you listen he's alive in every newborn baby's cry. The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up |

This shows me then, that you did not come by your attributes carelessly...they've been handed down, carefully, from generation to generation... this is so very wonderful.... it is now illumined by a light in my library.... |

Loved it, and brought to mind the old photos at my Gramma's of men that scared the >>>> of me. I had to wait in the parlour, and they always stared at me (well I was kid)! Loved this one Ethome, just great! "Lose your temper and you lose a friend; lie and you lose yourself." |

ETHome~ I just love it .... Love it, I tell you ! ! ! The imagination of a child is breathtakingly refreshing ! 'Like the mystery in the wind his true spirit never ends.' What a spirited legacy to behold. *Hugs* ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

Mysteria I know what you mean, when you're a kid those old family portraits seemed so scary, they never smiled, always so sober. Thanks for the comments! Thanks Nate I appreciate the comments! Janet my dear poet pet I always appreciate your enthusiastic comments! Paula thank you once again for stopping in to read and for the kind words! Marge, I'm glad you loved it and I know your spirit will never end also! The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up |
