Silhouette

A misty morning wrapped in gray
And chill of dampness on the bay
Were harbingers to well forewarn
The strength of an impending storm

And yet her figure in the haze
Undaunted by the wintry days
Hunched forward but with steadfast pace
Trekked one more time on footpath’s trace

I watched her silhouette each day
Against the silver of the bay
The same old woman walked the cliff
In aged stance, deformed and stiff

I never saw her turn her head
Nor had a single word been said
And yet she’s here among us all
And daily walks the inlet wall

Though frail, she has determined will
To climb the steep and rocky hill
For this, the neighbors call her odd
For all the miles that she has plod

But on a morning such as this
Her figure in the harbor mist
Gave pause to wonder at her plight
And so my heart began to write

I tacked a note for her to see
It said, “Please won’t you stop for tea”
Tacked on a post set in the grass
Along the path where she would pass

But whistling winds brought thunderous roar
A few miles out yet from the shore
No hope for her to make it back
Before skies turned an eerie black

And so I knelt and said a prayer
That she be safe within God’s care
I pictured her in morning’s chill
Atop the hamlet’s highest hill

Then tears of joy began to pour
At quiet knocking on my door
She stood before me, cold and wet
The figure of a silhouette

And in that visit she disclosed
The suffering that I supposed
Her destination every day
Was where her son in silence lay

The love of soul, the warmth of tea
Exposed a treasure new to me
From that day on, her daily walk
Meant stopping in to have a talk

For all compassion in the end
Brought warmth to her
To me, a friend

I found this jewel almost out of reach with only two replies.  I could not let it disappear, so back to the top it goes, Liz.  Just magnificent!  A great story and much enjoyed.

very beautiful writing, Liz. You painted the picture so vividly I could see her in my mind and watch the scenario play out...one of those little "slice of life" stories that are so beautiful in their simplicity...and in your hands.

Yes, you do this so very well, reaching out with the hand of friendship, then memorializing it for the rest of us to learn from....

well done, Lady Santos...

I loved it!  You always do a wonderful job of the form and format, but the story in this was so heartwarming and wonderful.  I could see the wrinkles about her brow, now that is writing!  You simply amaze me!  Thank you once again for a wonderous read.
