I just had to repost this as my grandfather raised me. He was the father I always knew! This is a story bout a grandpa and grandson I walked proudly with him when I was young. I'd try to act older than a little kid walkin and talkin just like he did. Well I never asked for anything more than his love and he'd put his arm around me and call me Bub. Under blue skies where white clouds sailed he'd spin silk and magic into his tales. We had fishin poles, secret holes, and worms in pails we'd scout old wood roads huntin whitetail. I heard campfire stories and I learned the truth about the great war that took Grandpa's youth. He'd say...rememeber son.... There's always someone out there givin out advice take care how you listen they might not have it right. And all the mighty leaders tellin people what to do are visions from the past where hell was set to rule. So pray for the time man won't kill his fellow man keep the faith for peace and stay close to the land. And I'd sit there beaming by the campfire flame while an old hoot owl was calling out his name. And I'd think to myself we'll be doin this forever cause Grandpa fought to make the world better. We strolled through Autumn leaves and Summer grass and we talked of older times fillin out his past. We'd hike in the rain and watch shiny Otters playin with every day the same like forever was there waiting. When the golden years ended the golden bowl collapsed I was never really ready and the hurt knocked me flat. And in the grief and pain I thought that I'd die but the memory of his tender words kept my soul alive. There's always someone out there givin out advice take care how you listen they might not have it right. And all the mighty leaders tellin people what to do are visions from the past where hell was set to rule. So pray for the time man won't kill his fellow man keep the faith for peace and stay close to the land. © Eric True The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up spaces of consciousness and resistance; to language oppressions; to re-language historie [This message has been edited by ethome (edited 06-17-2001).] |

This is wonderful Eric ... such a beautiful tribute to your grandfather's wisdom and love. You've got me misty-eyed. I loved this both for what it meant to you, and also for the sweet memories it brought back for me ... the campfires, fishing poles and worms in pails ... ahh to hold my grandfather's hand and walk down the trail in eager anticipation to the fishing hole ... thank you for this! ![]() Best wishes, /Kit |

What a wonderful picture was painted with your palette of words which described a very special man. I'm sure he'd be so proud of this lovely piece of writing. Take care.....Sue Suetang |

Ah, now I have to have a little cry, you really pull the heartstrings here. I'm happy that you had that wonderful relationship. My Grandpa was my only real Dad, and I miss him lots. It's true, you are never really ready for a time they will be gone. Beautiful poem. Sandra |

My grandfathers were gone before I ever came along, and truthfully, from what I know of one, I would have hated him. But your poem is a beautiful tribute to the love that can bridge generations... and the wisdom you learned from your grandfather is something we all can cherish and learn from. *S* This is beautiful, ethome! Thanks for sharing this one, Eric -- it brings back very fond memories of my grandpa, to whom I was very close. You ever notice how interesting it is that very young kids and seniors can quite literally see eye-to-eye and what a fascinating full-circle it is to start as a baby/kid who knows "nothing", live life learning via the LONG-way detour, only to return esentially to the same point of Wisdom after a lifetime of unlearning? Anyways, very much enjoyed your poem. -MVS "If you think you know it all, you have a lot to learn." |
