Evening and another trip Around the lake… Old Jeep rattles on gravel And dust flies through Open windows… As in slow creeping fashion I try and slip past the Heat of day and into night. Deer usually there somewhere Greet headlights with wide eyed stares That bounce with each bump in the Rutted road from here to nowhere Owls… wisdom not their nature Sit long in front of me Till I step on the brake And slow even more to allow them In comical imitation of rabbit To hop out of the way… Occasional fox or coyote Slink hurriedly away from the noise And smell of my old oil burner As he grumbles up inclines And shudders down again Evening and another trip Around the lake and back to childhood When evening stars and full moon Would outline swaying trees And every shadow held in its midst The things you feared…. Now… darkness folds the landscape Onto itself and two thin beams try to Lead me home… With windows down and dust Coating the inside of my nose So that I can't smell the memories Of being alone… |
