Virginia Salter There’s a gentle rain outside quenching the land of thirst It’s soft and tender flow will keep the dam from burst its trickle’s been drunken in by the roots and the worms that crawl and all the little creatures head out for springtime ball the dragonfly is sparkling by grasshopper is growing fine all ladybugs are giving hugs to aphids on the vine the kitty cats dance with the rats they’re charming in their ways old Sol peeks in and tickles chin with filtered springtime rays the moths do flit above cricket’s spit caterpillars stand aghast the shadows cool the old snail’s drool and beetles scurry past el pero ruffs thinks he’s quite tough olde garter slithers by slinking through the tall, tall weeds while its prey just whispers, “My!” © June 7, 2001 |
