Coyote was
At a time when all
Things were different
Not the trickster
He is today.

Once he stood
In the center of the circle
And was honored for
His courage and
Stature

In the days
When man was still
One of the tribes,
A young chief came
To the center
And spoke,
While standing in
Coyotes shadow

This young man
Had traveled far in
His quest to stand
At the center of all things
So Coyote’s shadow
Was welcome relief
From the burning
Sun.

But as time
Passed, the young chief
Grew restless with
Having his view
Of the east blocked
By Coyote as he
Stood and spoke to
The day

Coyote
Turned his back
On the young chief
For a moment, and
When he turned around
He saw the man had stolen
His shadow and left.

Upset coyote vowed
To leave the center of
All things and the wheel
Which turns upon itself
To track down this
Man

For many days
Coyote journeyed
To the tribe of man
And finally entered
The village of the chief.

Confronting him,
Coyote asked where
His shadow was and why
Had man stolen it?

The chief looked
At coyote with pale eyes
And told him his shadow
Had been given over to night
In return for a new bride
Which he had wed
And now carried
His child.

He then told coyote
That he knew where
Night kept his shadow,
But he would have to promise
Never to stand in the center
Of all things again
If he wished to
Find it.

Coyote howled
Despairing over his loss,
But agreed.

Now man
Stands at the center
Of the wheel
And coyote searches
The darkness
For shades of grey
That is his shadow

Stopping now
And again
To mourn to
The laughing
Moon

Ahhh Mon Capitaine Hirsute
is your rapier honed these days
I fear mine grows dull with disuse
Seems rare to find an opponent whose
mettle allows for anything but the
oh so boringly quick thrust barely
a parry then slash and thrust they fall
smiling all the while it loses its honor
such ahh but to toil again in focus
and actually use my proper hand

how I miss those swipes so close
nicks that redden the sash indeed
toss your gauntlet at your leisure if
nothing more than for old times sake
I am of course at your service

Welcome aboard Ron
Le Capitaine Regarde offers his salute
and awaits your pleasure

"The most redeeming facet of life is that we have the comfort of knowing it will end. Death doth love equally."

Tis a wonderful ancient story you have put to verse, Cpat.  It is good to read it again...and ATelamon, I knew him not by name, but certainly when his tongue was unfolding I recodgnized it...and there he placed his moniker for me to know for certain.  I would so enjoy the duel of swords between you two again.  Just this taste is invigorating despite the chaos that seems to dwell within my very core today.
