The Landing at Tarawa There was the reef; A nasty gape of coral, Like broken teeth It gnawed flesh, Ankles, shins, wrists. Then, As though the nightmare of an addict's dream Had suddenly become reality, Needles burst upward through the lagoon's skin. In the bubbles of drowning men Blood surfaced. Finally, the ten-foot beach began. All that day Marines refused to move inland. RMW |

Can't even imagine what it must have been like... beach landings under hostile fire and some of the worst conditions... I don't think I really want to know, but its something we should never forget... least we have to do it all over again. Peace to you and yours. |
