A VagabondI wish to be a vagabond a'trail upon the land, with grizzled face to hide behind and little in my hand. A keen but simple studier of living's rutted row, I'll sleep near stream of no regret where singing waters slow. No care abiding in my heart as dark prepares its bed, nor shame for silent solitude, nor lover's oath, unsaid. I'll have no need for honest arms to hold me under stars, for bitter breath of night will find me warm 'neath silent scars. Then sun in morning's promenade will shine upon my face. But a vagabond, I'm off toward another empty place. Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?......Henry David Thoreau |

Wow, Claire, you've created another great work here. Your emotion carries well all the way through and the flow is beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. But then I've always been sort of a vagabond myself. Michael |

Just, just when I think I can start believing I might be a poet, Claire comes along, and I learn I have so much to learn..... well done Madam! |

Claire~ Oh, girl ... I like your vagabond ways ... 'bitter breath of night will find me warm 'neath silent scars.' Exquisite phrasing ! *Hugs* ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

When first I entered the posting world of poetry on the net = a close friend introduced me to the concept of an alias: he'd chosen "Vagabond" - I wanted it - but there could not vbe 2 of us in my mind - (that was late '97 in another forum). It never occured to me then - and does not still - have any of the trieste sort of notions found in your poem - but the title sure caught my attention- suffice to sy at this point - I'm very glad I've read most all of what you've posted - So I'll simply say 'thank you' for posting a truly beautiful poem I'll treasure |

indeed my friend this fits you perfectly. . . wonderful. . . ----------------------------------------------------------- To the world, you may only be one person. But to one person, you may be the world. |

Severn, "thank you" seems overused as well, but I'll say it anyway. So "thank you" for your "beautiful." (o: Nan, thank you. It's a rather simple piece, but certainly fit my frame of mind when I wrote it. Much obliged. Wilfred, thank "you" for your sincere response. Something about the vagabond has always held a romantic aire for me, but as you can see in this poem, there is more to life than running away. Thanks very much for letting me know you've enjoyed this. Sven, this fits me? That's what I was afraid of...(sigh) But thanks for reading, all the same. Well I'm the kind of guy who never settles down, I roam from place to place, I roam from town to town, they call me the wanderer, yeah the wanderer, I roam around, and round and round. The song went something like that...glad I'm not a wanderer though...James |

Elizabeth, thank you for the lovely. I'm glad you liked it. James, there are many types of vagabonds. I think I should have titled this "Vagabond Heart." That would be more accurate for the message I was trying to express. Ah, well. I'm glad you're not a wanderer too. It's nice to be able to see you here. Another great poem from you Claire. Like Sunshine said, so much to learn... It reminds me of a Metallica song, Wherever I May Roam, "Wherever I may roam Where I lay my head is home..." in this case its your heart...forgive my indulgences of Metallica *L* |

Poetic Knight, I'm not familiar with that particular Metallica song (okay, with ANY Metallica songs) but please, sing away. (o: Thanks very much for reading this one ~ I'm pleased that you liked it enough to let me know.
