Finding Rhyme For a Season
Virginia Salter

nothing much more beautiful and comforting
than the aroma of roast turkey, apple pie and fresh homemade bread
that was Grandma’s at Christmas, like being hugged by family
to step in to those smells, it meant smiles and laughter

dumb jokes, big bellies and afternoon snores, it meant pumpkin pie,
whipping cream after cold, roast turkey sandwiches in the evening
it meant sweet pickles, dill pickles, olives in a glass
tossed salad, ambrosia, a laddie and a lass

cousins, aunts, uncles, then, too,
Mama and Dad, and me and you
now I can only go there in my dreams
and memories granted in my mind’s-eye stream

I miss those times, I miss them great
but if I hadn’t had them, that’s what I’d hate

So I’ll take the sweet that fills my dreams
carry it with me by the mountain streams
I’ll take it to the shore, the desert, too,
I’ll tarry in the garden beneath the blue

Memories of family gathering should never be forgotten. This is a lovely tribute to a time well worth remembering

Thank you all for responding to this poem with such positive feed back.  After the low comments of this week, I was about to ask for all my poems to be deleted from this forum because people had stopped reading them.

Maybe you can stand them after all.
