Starred SkyStarred sky reminds of bolder times when hearts were sound and sure, and knight, alive with hungering for fairest maiden, pure. For bounty flew with beauty, grace, held sailing souls to shore. And lost in eyes of skysweet dream, men wept forevermore. But only one would claim the blush of maiden's tenderness. As steady as this sparkled sky, her loyal knight's caress. To know her love in mantlemoon, no will nor strength to leave. 'Neath crimson rise of sun's incline, in daybreak would he grieve. But rode to battle, dutybound and pledging swift return, with silver flash of sabre's sweep, her favour for to earn. As legend tells, the seasons crept. Her knight, he came no more, and maiden, bearing broken heart fell cold to castle floor. But as her anguished sisters rushed, no maiden found they there. Instead, a pool of starlit tears met cries of stunned despair. What came of maid, so long ago, whose eyes beguiled brave men? Starred sky reminds, she waits above to live and love again. Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?......Henry David Thoreau [This message has been edited by Meadowmuse (edited 03-29-2001).] |

Sven, thank you. So glad you enjoyed it. Are you familiar with the rest of Leighton's work? I find it so very rich with image and elegance. When I read your pretty poem today, something startled my muse and away she went, writing. (o: Thanks much for the inspiration, my friend. SEA, pleased that you like this one. Isn't the painting with Sven's poem lovely ? I'm not sure where it currently hangs, but just imagine what it would be to actually stand gazing at it! (sigh) (o: Thanks again, for reading. Sven, Dicksee's elegant, evocative treatment of La Belle Dame Sans Merci is my favorite too, though it is closely rivaled by the richness of Arthur Hughes' rendering. Beautiful, inspiring art, to be sure. (o: Jeffrey, thank you kind sir. (o: Kathleen, thank you so much for letting me know this piece touched you.
