state of confusion

Summer of Sand

Summer was
a time without demands -
to be spent in the sun,
riding crisp, curling waves,
or perched upon our tiny Sailfish
with Mom at the helm.
With my brother and I
safely strapped
into orange life preservers,
she'd tack the distance
to Fiesta Island,
for picnics on sandy dunes.

Occasionally, we'd walk to the boulevard,
barefoot, across hot tarmac
that ran the length of the sand spit,
dividing ocean from bay.

There were odd little shops,
custom bikinis, handmade surfboards,
and plenty of bars;
most curious
was the condemned looking
"Cave,"
next door to Toby’s Deli.
We were slaves
to Toby’s Hoagies,
whose secret ingredient
was oregano-spiced oil.

It was just the three of us then,
before the pursuit
of separate friends and interests,
back when Mom still needed us
for moral support,
youthful regrets were nil,
and the ocean's roar
lulled us to sleep.

Beautifully expressed, Corinne. Some of my best memories are those seashore memories with family. This is lovely!

Thank you, Bob, those were some fine days indeed. A Sailfish is a funny little boat, isn't it? Only your feet go inside, you sit on the edge. I always envied the people with "real" sailboats. Now I look back and was just glad to have had the experience.

Thank you, Sunshine! Nothing like the ocean to create memories, is there?

Thank you, Denise and Sudhir!

It's a pleasure to read something I can understand, it means something, this is real....expression and a lovely poem.
