The Power Suit

Middle aged,
But in a suit which just that morning
Had made it exquisitely clear
To a board room packed
With junior partners of the group
Just how riveting she could be
If necessary.
But that was then.
Now,
At the tag end of the day,
While contemplating the long commute
That lay ahead,
She felt the need to luxuriate.
Her eyes wandered
To the man wedged between two elderly women
In the seat that ran longitudinally,
Across from her.
Polished shoes, they nearly gleamed.
Black slacks,
But odd the way his briefcase seemed
To climb his chest,
Then lock itself beneath his chin.
Were it not for his distant expression,
His obvious desire
To make further room
For those who were certainly not his companions
Would have appeared ludicrous.
She wondered,
Then glanced down at the hem
That, though presently clamping her knees together,
Threatened the potential for encouragement.
She felt the hum
And the familiar vibration
As the bus thrummed over cobblestones.
Casually she looked around,
Concerned lest there be insufficient room
To make a comment.
She knew from experience
Precisely how to overwhelm
With understatement.
The thought brought to mind her pre-dawn selection
Of lingerie. Settling in the man's direction
She began
By returning a strand of hair
To its proper place behind her ear
While simultaneously insuring
That one nylon crossing the other
Moved with the precision
Of a finely meshed machine.
Done,
She longed a stare out of the window,
While counting down,
"Three, two, one", timing was critical.
Convinced his mind held every line
She then turned back
To a surprise as sudden as the realization
Of finding that her day-planner
Had dropped from her lap
And was being extended,
Along with a smile,
By a man then being addressed by the driver with
"Your stop next, Father O'Brian."

Some great lines here....

"At the tag end of the day,..."

"...But odd the way his briefcase seemed
To climb his chest,
Then lock itself beneath his chin."

"She wondered,
Then glanced down at the hem
That, though presently clamping her knees together,
Threatened the potential for encouragement."

"She knew from experience
Precisely how to overwhelm
With understatement."

"While simultaneously insuring
That one nylon crossing the other
Moved with the precision
Of a finely meshed machine."

"'Three, two, one', timing was critical.
Convinced his mind held every line"

"Your stop next, Father O'Brian."

and I had to smile at the end, because who said his mind was NOT so engaged?...

well done!  Very well done!

Excellent use of truth in humor.  I especially appreciated the juxtaposition of the men in the boardroom with the man on the bus, the thinking aloud about whether and how to "market" oneself or connect in professional and personal situations, and the twist at the end. Thank you!

Great twist at the end, my friend.
A thoroughly enjoyable ride all the way
