What I’d Wanted
Virginia Salter

I had wanted...
I had looked forward to
the day when you would become serene,
grateful, able to rely upon me
for tenderness and care giving.

A day when you would not fight my gestures,
not fight my wisdom,
not fight.

I longed for the day
when I would again hear you sing,
see your eyes alive with glimmers of joy,
and be able to hug your shoulders,
cactus spine free.

I awaited the day,
when,though bent and frail,
ever graying,
you would reach out to be steadied by a stronger hand,
a hand extended in love,
to offer balance.

But you’ve gone away,
three years now, and more,
and I think this Mother’s Day
may be the toughest yet
since you left.

Yet,
it is as if
I must remember
your need to leave the pain,
the pain that had been eating you from within,
spreading its leaven in its attempt to engulf you.
That I need to realize
that your needs, not mine,
were most important
then, that it couldn't be about me,
and I had to let mine go.

And, now,
my needs can be met in the memory
of your love and your own unique way
of showing it.  Too, perhaps,
I would not have had the strength
of heart and mind
to be whom I had planned to be,
for you, when you had become
the who I planned of you.

Nice poem, VAS.  We all remember our mothers in our own way.  Love, Joyce

One such poem that I keep tucked away. For this occasion a beautiful tribute. LP

oh, how sad but how pretty...

Time flies? Say it not so, time stays we go.

Virginia, *BIG HUGS*
It takes a lot of strength to write something like this...

Enjoyed reading!
