Antique Toy Store

Through dusty glass up on a shelf
A scene that stirred my inner self
Six thousand soldiers in a line
Still frozen in the depths of time

Poised high on horse and some afoot
Their fate is wriiten in a book
But renacted are the toys
Six thousand men for little boys

My eyes then wandered not too far
Six thousand little antique cars
Displayed behind the pane of glass
The replicas of wheels with class

Then in a corner of the store
Six thousand books or maybe more
The books I read in youthful times
With word that sings and verse that rhymes

Six thousand times I watched my son
Line up his soldiers one by one
And fight a battle til the end
With men of courage, foe and friend

Those painted cars six thousand times
On roads of dirt beneath the pines
Were driven through the dust by hands
Of neighbor kids and little fans

We’d gather on a summer porch
On hazy days in August scorch
And read the tales of kings and elf
The ones for sale upon the shelf

The nursery rhymes, the words of Milne
Were etched in childhood’s learning kiln
Six thousand verses memorized
Of bears and moons and starry skies

Those that sit upon a shelf
A small reflection of myself
And from these roots one day I’d find
Six thousand ways to write a rhyme

An antique toy store let me look
Into nostalgia’s loving book
And through the dusty glass of time
The memories pour forth a rhyme

For deeper do the words impart
From chambers of a poet’s heart
To you whose words I’ve cherished most
I offer this six thousanth post

Elizabeth Santos

First and foremost:
A truly excellent and beautiful poem
Next:
Heartiest congratulations on achieving 6000
Last:
In the years 1938-4? I've a vivid memory of yours truly playing in the dirt/sandbox - with those tootsetoy cars and trucks and myriad lead soldiers  You restored that memory - perhaps I'll be able to pen something
In the year 1969  (My son was 2) I bought hime some 'Matchbox' toy trucks - What began innocently - turned into a collection of well over 3000 (a real number) it started out 'his' but at his request - circa 12, 13 years later - we traded my coin collection for his 'matchbox' (he retained the 'battlekings' ~grin~

See what memories you defrosted from their cryogenic freezer?-  (know anyone interested in buying some matchbox vehicles circa 1953-1985? )
