He stares into my eyes
so very deeply
with love,
inquisitiveness
seeking answers
to questions
he'll never ask....
still, we understand
each other...

We sit
on the couch
and he wraps himself
around me
like a heavy blanket,
his weight
sometimes intolerably heavy
yet comforting and warming...

At times,
he rests his head
in my lap
dreaming
of things
that trouble or please him
but he'll never tell me about them...

The love we share
is mostly unspoken
but communicated instead
with hugs, pats and kisses.
He watches over me
and I watch over him
and occasionally
I cry
tears of joy
for my good fortune
of knowing him.

This is the love
we share,
me and my Buddy...
my 100-plus pound
German Shepherd.

Thank you PdV.  I've owned many dogs, but this dog is amazing.  I've never had a dog sit and look/stare me right in the eyes the way he does.  It's odd, the way he will come up to me and look at me so deeply AND lovingly with those big ol' brown eyes.
Sometimes, I'll be standing around somewhere and he'll come over to me and lean against me like he's giving me a hug...he's also letting me know that he wants a hug too.  He's so very affectionate.
Anyway, glad you like the poem.

Oh I love this!  I could relate very well.  My Ellie Mae is half German Shepard and half Rottweiller and is a very special addition to our family.
Nice one, Mike!

Equal time for dogs today.  Dr. Doolittle should be showing up any moment now.  Loved your poem!

I love your poem and you had me fooled.  I love dogs and want one again, but I have a big cat that adopted me who is so afraid of dogs, he would stay under the house for ever.  So I have to forgo my dog for now.  Love, Joyce

The unspoken and unconditional love between animals and mankind has filled many an anthropologist's digest, and still we cannot answer fully why a time our household pets hold firmly our affections that sometimes surpasses those of another human. For me it was a tri-colored sheltie, who knew my every mood and move.
