My friends the Chickens
Three have died just one left.

Because she's there She's the best;
Rooster mates , But holds back seed,
She's to old to create from need.
Not even his brand, she's gold He's white
A mother daughter & Grandchild,
all his , That keeps him light.
Goldy feeds with them
though her eyes are dim,
She misses most of the food
not directly under her chin.
She sees their necks go down,
yes she sees that in a blur,
She guesses they must be feeding,
so gives herself a stir.
Just below their heads she pecks,
throwing beak & head from side to side,
not picking up anything just there really for the ride;
It has to be done with hand now,
separate from the others to avoid a row.
Jealousy means a cruel stare,
Who knows what when I am not there?
She can find a palm filled with seed,
she goes wild & frantic gulping that feed.
How did we get there? I followed her lead

I have no experience with chickens, thecraig, but that was an interesting read. I do actually have some cows across the street but I'm not getting that close.

Craig  I only have one chicken left ,,,she was the only one  who would not    go into the pen at night ..all the others  went in to roost   and that is where the fox got them .  soo now  she  survives indepentdently  and alone ..suffering the sheep  ddog to "round her up "   constantly . I know she misses the roosters    who always spent  so much time chasing each other that  they forgot her  ..I know she  has eggs somewhere  but I cannot find them because  she  does  not  cackle  to      give the game away .. but they will never hatch now  so it is   all so useless ,Still she is nice to look at    in her autumn tonings    and  being only one   now I never feed her...but I am going to love  her  more  since your poem       and  be  kinder to her .........I killed her  friends  with kindness .....locking them up  each night   aaaahhhhhhhhhh
