Bonding

The morning mist still clutches the meadow
As slanting sunlight pierces the border trees
The gosling peers over the dry grass hummock
My love preens her feathers close by
I keep my neck erect, eyes alert
Knowing it is time
We walk to the pond's edge
Quietly cruising across its dark stillness
The love in her eyes - she sees reflected in mine
We know we've a lifetime together before us
Our wakes disappear immediately
As we nest again
In our haven for the season

The first duty of love is to listen.

Bill--I love the thought of two swans mating for a life time..and going back again and again to the same place.  This is a touching poem.

Bill,

Great work here.  Excellent use of imagery.  Looks like "I" can learn something from you. :-)

Amazing how it is so very easy to see ourselves in the beast and fowl kingdom -

I, myself, have always believed to have been, in other lives,

a cat,

or a horse....

if only it was so easy for humans to follow their instincts as in nature.
beautiful poem of images ...
clever employ of metaphor.
so well done ... gifted, poet sir.

I love your imperfections ... I love your everything ...
Your broken heart ... your broken wings.

Thank you for a lovely, tender and beautifully written poem, I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Our black loons do the same here in Canada, quite amazing really.

I've watched Geese - their 'bonding' and Swans as well - - although I've also seen Loons while in Canada - enjoyed their diving antics and their unique sound - I did not know they too bonded - Thank you all for your gracious replies
