~*~ The Lorelei ~*~A long, long time ago, or so the fable goes, There lived in a village, a maiden with such incredible beauty. But heart was heavy as her lover had abandoned her, So she decided to find new happiness and love. She was soon labeled, as Bacharach’s notorious, Bewitching damsel, an enchantress of demonic beauty. The women townspeople began to judge her And cried that her beauty was a bearer of sin. Gossip built as it often does, and very soon, This lonely beauty, was declared a witch. Talk of her outstanding beauty spread everywhere, Throughout the town of Bacharach. The village women said her magnetic beauty Mesmerized and enchanted all their men. Sadly, it was because her lover became faithless, And abandoned her that she searched for a new love. In searching for a tender heart, jealousy, Persecution and charges of sin began to spread. The women stormed the mayer and charged she was a witch, Casting spells upon all the male villagers, Using her beauty to entrap all their men. But sadly the only thing this fair maiden Was guilty of was in seeking a new love, To fill her heart and soothe he soul. At the heresy trial she pleaded for death, But the Bishop seeing her beauty, was kind. He knew how she had suffered so, And he declared her innocent of heresy, but Announced she would spend the rest of her Days serving in the local convent, Her sentence for life was now cast in stone. He ordered three guards to escort her there. So was so sad and forlorn as she climbed, The familiar rocky cliff beside the Rhine. Her heart was breaking at her fate, To live the rest of her day in isolation. On the steep cliff she begged for one last glance, She had to embrace her beautiful Rhine. The three soldiers could not resist, And escorted her to the top of the cliff, And there they left her alone as she wept. She knew in her heart that which was her only fate. She took a longing look at her beloved Rhine. The sea was raging; she cried out one last lament, Echoes could be heard of her faithless love’s name. As legend has it when she leapt from the cliff, But by some magic she was transformed that day. She still swims along the shore of the Rhine. And the three soldiers watched as the sea swallowed, On that day, the most beautiful, sad mourning dove. Legend tells that those three soldiers Mysteriously died on that same day. The beautiful Lorelei leapt from the cliff, And cried out mournfully to her death. She was transformed into a siren, And for centuries now she lays, Upon the cold rocks of the Rhine, Singing a dream like song to passing sailors, Luring their ships to the beach in her search, but, Destroying them with each breath of love. Her beautiful haunting voice, steady and sensuous, Sill guides all the sailors to their death at sea. She lures then sensuously with her voice, They say her death call, is a cry for love. She cries in an attempt to find a true lover. She is damned to fail in her mournful cry, As each siren call misguides the ships to the rocks. Even today, listen close, the Lorelei can be heard, Singing on the Rhine River near St. Goar, There is no proof but in her search for love, Her siren call killed hundreds of men, Although they have now barricaded this Legendary area away from any ships, as Bewitched, still enchanted, sailors still Go to sweet Lorelei, time and time again! ~*~ There is an echoing rock named after the legendary Lorelei by Sankt Garshauser in Germany ~*~ This is just a little story for my Granddaughter, so put away the red pen, I will fix it tomorrow, too tired now! Thank you Sunshine for inspiring me to do it with your flawless poem tonight about the young mermaid. When I grow up I want to write like you or somewhere even close~ Mermaid courtesy of ~*www.dakota.net*~ Music ~*Watermark by Enya*~ ~*~ I write, therefore I am ~*~ [This message has been edited by Mysteria (edited 04-15-2001).] |

Mysteria, perhaps between the two of us, we may someday grace the world with new enchanting creatures, and become modern day, Sisters Grimm.... I do so enjoy inspiring, and being inspired, by those I read here in Passions! |
