The Battle of Britain Ah yes, those Norwegian's. Now those chaps put up quite a remarkable fight but they too fell under the wrath of Hitler's blitzkrieg might. Isn't it good Norwegian wood? And those French. Why they just rolled over and played dead. How soon the Germans occupied Paris. Now that's a thought to dread. After all wasn't it Charles DeGualle who tried to get those old French Generals to build beaucoup big tanks and new modern war machines? But yes it was in fact the old Generals that won that one and in just the amount of time it would take you to consume a bottle of good French wine the Maginot Line was overrun. But the jolly good Brits, it was they who caused Hitler to have a fit. Now here's something Hitler couldn't seem to understand. Britain wasn't about to accept Hitler's bid for peace unless he gave back all those conquered lands. So Hitler unleashed more than one thousand planes. Didn't take them long at all to arrive in London and fly right up the Thames. And as they flew along they dropped these big ugly bombs. Soon the whole area was a mass of rumbles and flames. London took a royal pounding for at least 57 days and nights and the people could only break down and cry to watch their family and friends bleed and die as gloom and sorrow descended as a black goo from the unforgiving sky. But miracles were happening in those same skies. A handful of British fighter pilots met Goering's Luftwaffe metal to metal and eye to eye. Although outmatched two or three to one they had radar too guide them and brave hearts to man there bombs and guns. Goering's Luftwaffe has now met their match it seems. Great Britain has stopped Hitlers advance and is now destroying all his dreams. Britain was saved. And Churchill wasted no time to give the brave pilots who flew the Spitfires and Hurricane's their just due as he shared in his message on August 20, 1940. "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." Is that why some call it Great Britain? I leave that thought with you. JamesLee@April12,2001 |

Michael, A wonderful piece of writing. Like Churchill you said an awful lot in very few words. |
