I read the report with horror, it simply could not be. Young navy officer shot for sport, he was only twenty-three. I could not grasp the concept, that a human so depraved Could be residing in our lovely land. One of the devil's enslaved. My soul is heavy-burdened, as though the act were my own. Though I could not have changed the circunstance, even had I known. Did a mother really raise such a son, or was he merely spawned? No punishment can pay for this, In the now or in some beyond. My mother heart is riven, for you, mother of the slain boy. The good , adventurous young man, who brought you naught but joy. I know some of your sorrow, for I too have lost a son. But he was felled by illness, Not by such an evil one. I could not forgive in a thousand years, the one who shot the gun That would end the rich and valuable life of my own beloved son. But as I ponder and truly sorrow at this grievous loss, so needless. Is there a distraught mother of that one, So degenerate and heedless? Where you will find joy in remembrance, she will have only pain. She must be sorry se ever bore him and you'd do it over again. I hope time will help to lessen the sorrow you now know. We thought our community safe and secure. Please forgive us, it wasn't so. by Joyce 2000 |
