In this poem I tried to find the parallels between couples who live together silently, methodically, unhappily, and those who blamefully, methodically, unhappily scream out their unmet needs. Mechanical Lovers (We’re All Hiding) Looking back on the years How the distance has grown Years’ worth of fixings So sure they would hold Mechanical lovers – we didn’t know The remote had lost its control You tried to love me Your body was there But you wore that familiar frown I said, “you’re not with me” You said, “I know” Mechanical lovers’ safety zone My thoughts are so very dark these days Yeah, I’m more than a little depressed I tried to love you, you scared me away I sincerely attempted our dreams Mechanical lovers will find a way To hold it together, it seems “What makes me happy? Here’s what I need When you don’t give, what do I have? I try to give what I know you need Please pursue this, where is your drive? You’re just a mechanical lover, And sometimes not even alive.” “I need a breakdown, I need a shakedown I’ll show you want I can do I rattle cages, if I could have your life I’d fix your attitude. Mechanical lover, do what I say And remember, I’m not your wife!” Plenty of time is what strangles you You really just want to be numb Turn away from the doses of sanity Curl up in your warm, sleepy womb The lovers and dancers kiss and caress, this Mechanical lover, lost and restless… Our hearts have known the pains and fears Yeah, I’ve come here to reflect We’ve had our joys and tears no matter What we hope or expect We crave the love, we fear the fall Maybe not so mechanical, after all… |

You know what continues to take me by surprise? Sometimes when I read my stuff I see things I wish I would have edited. Just then someone writes and says I really like this line! We all wish for someone to be able to identify themselves in our words in whatever way they can, right? So, you just rescued my unfavorite line, and maybe I'll like it now! Thank you! |
