The dust settles
past my sigh.
It's not that it's cold,
but I'm vaguely uncomfortable.
The stone walls
are lifeless,
dark and guarded,
barely showing handprints
where I disturbed years of grime.

It was so long ago,
almost another world,
when this much respect
was shown for the dead.
I can't help but be interested,
stare at the dark kist;
can't help but wonder
if this could be my own.

The sepulcher is open behind me,
a staircase that leads back
to the light outside.
Though unsettled,
I will not leave.

For respect
of a person and name
I do not know,
I have brought with me
a single rose.
The petals are dark as blood,
darker still
in this shadowed room.

I reach out tentatively
to place it on the coffin;
intricately carved
in a stone
that may have once been white.

So long ago;
before the over-finished wood
was placed into the ground
in what now resembles concrete bunkers
(so the ground won't sink in
when things start to decay).
This is the side of death
that spawned pensive, romantic thoughts;
not our modern efficiency
and disposal
that just rushes things out of sight.

I imagine that once,
the coffin was open,
allowing for familial grief
to exact one more visit.
Cold eyes to be kissed
then left behind.

I turn away,
back towards daylight.
Death was not designed
to linger on so greatly.
A stranger's,
long since gone,
shouldn't do this to me.

The loneliest words you'll ever know:
if only, if only it were so.

*dark kist and dark kiss*

I love you, baby. And I see this being about two things -- the past, and the future.

Thanks for th' present of you, Lori-Anne...

I love you.

Love you too, twice over.

I so shouldn't be awake right now. :P Mom woke me, so I could sign up for classes I don't want to take. Hopefully they're full....two days after the listings went up... Um...Yeh.

I think I'll try to go back to bed. Then to work, then to sleep, then to BILLY IDOL! No, I'm not excited at all, why?

You write well, Lori. I'd say more but I'm at a loss for words.
