I see this man-
He wears a mask
fashioned by everyone else
he lives his life
and judges himself
by their unrealistic
standards

I see his dreams-
He slings them
careless, across the limb
to which he clings
desperate, silenced
by his southern
pride

I see this man-
nightly he casts
off the onerous facade
he lies naked, prone
covered only by
his tattered
ego

I hear his despair-
he sets forth
a great cathartic lament
for each gasping
breath, heaving sob,
I die a little
death

I reach across
a thousand miles
to caress away his tears
he suffers, bled of
his manliness, small
comfort I must
be

I love this man-
trodden by life
by the cruelty of others
I am humbled by
his depth of sadness
proud of his noble
strength

I see this man-
see him sway
so weary of his burdens
and I give my love
in hope it's enough
to heal this broken
man
