Snow Day By WhiteKnight It falls today, so quiet, so peaceful, so white and innocent, the white snow, so pure. It takes me back to childhood, to a simpler time, to a happy day. I loved the snow; I wished it would never go away. I woke upon first light; it was so bright, the light, the light reflecting off the snow. It made my heart sing, it made me cry out with joy. I could not wait to go outside, to run and play, and sleigh ride. But wait! I had to stop. I had to listen. Listen to the radio. It would say if I could go. I waited impatiently, to hear if school was closed today. To see if I could put on my snow clothes today. I just want to play and play, I want to be in the snow all day. As I listened, I heard them say, "Your school is closed today, so go play". Yea! Yea! NO School Today! We yelled we jumped! We screamed! We cheered! We bundled up, up against the cold. Outside we went, into the snow, so so cold. So happy we were, us three, my brother, my sister, and me. We ran and jumped, we slipped and slid, and several snowmen build we did, one big, one little, and one shaped like our dog. We made snow angels and igloos, and snowballs too. We grew cold, in the snow we stayed, in the snow we played. Then we heard "the voice". "Oh no!" Said I, we tried to run, we tried to hide. The voice said yet again, "Come inside" we cried and cried, ”Oh no! Not inside!” But then we went. It hit us quick; it hit us as we went in the door, the smell. The smell I'll never forget, the smell of chocolate, Mom’s hot chocolate! Now, quickly we rushed, we hurried and we scurried, we took off our boots, hats, and mittens. We rushed to the table, to the warmth of our Mothers Love, and hot chocolate too! Mom handed out the marshmallows two by two. When we were done, to the fireplace we went, to warm our toes, to warm our hearts, to smell the smoke of a fire in the hearth. As we sat there, our family, one was missing, missing all the fun. My dad was not there, he never was. He was working once again; we had all we could ever want. My dad had left before first light, so we could live our lives just right. Dinnertime came and dinnertime went... Dad came home, around seven or so. We jumped him at the door, we yelled and screamed, and laughed for more. He played with us for a minute or two, then to dinner he went. He looked tired, he was beat, he had been working in the sleet. He looked at us and smiled, we knew he loved us, we knew he cared. I just wish he could have shared, would have shared, my childhood in the snow. |
