Now that winter's shadows have retreated,
Her stoic embers hushed to silent ash,
Sunlight celebrates dark days defeated,
And warms the bones after the cold wind's lash.

Spring grows from the ashes of winter's urn,
And beauty returns to her dominion,
The wheel of creation starts to turn,
Every new sign of life a pinion.

Branch and briar flourish, from stark and bare,
Fields that lay barren are full and lush,
Messengers of vernal joy fill the air,
The long missed song of the skylark and thrush.

Yet this joy is tainted with a sadness,
Knowing that this idyll is being slain,
For power is driving men to madness,
To destroy the world and themselves for gain.

Myths tell the tale, though we learn too late,
Mankind will always take more than it needs,
When Eve took from the Tree, she cursed out fate,
But the apple was not knowledge but greed.

To glut an appetite that knows no bounds,
We decimate forests and poison streams,
What will be the price, not dollars or pounds,
For building our 'Utopian dream'?

When will this Eden gasp her final moan,
Even her tears are polluted with waste,
Now that we've wrecked a world nobody owns,
Maybe that apple has a bitter taste.

There will come a spring, it may be near,
When the boughs are silent, and empty the sky,
Nature may ask why we shed no tears,
For she has been raped, abandoned to die.

this is excellent Tony...
your cadence and imagery are impressive
your message is true and powerful
Im going to send this to a friend who also takes up this cause.
very well done poet sir...
nice to see your name here

It's amazing
how you make your face just like a wall
how you take your heart and turn it off
how I turn my head and lose it all

Tony I am very much into this type of thinking and I know that more needs to be written and said. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I wish a lot of it wasn't true. Sadly mankind waits until there's a crises before he does anything about the situation... in the meantime big business and politics keep on being joined at the hip while they partake from a feast of wealth and corruption!

I would like to add this note:
This is how I still see things. I wish more would take the time.

The Shining Feeling

From where I stand I see the thaw
and on the frozen floor
the sun upon the glowing crust
is glistening bright and pure.

Upon the rolling marbled hills
the spiraled snowdrifts ride.
There is no place nor earthly thrill
like springtime sprouting life.

A musty scent is on the air
I lift my head and breathe.
Out of the sky I seem to hear
a calling on the breeze.

The sound of God and life and wild
the sound of earth that grows,
out of the wind that whispers by
the sound of trees that moan.

I know then why it is I care
I bend my head and pray.
I cannot lock them in my heart
these tear drops on my face.

The poet is like a cocoon; in him the caterpillar of the past finds rest, and from him the butterfly of the future emerges.

Tony, this is an amazing piece. Great word usage and choices, and incrediable message. We should make sure it comes back up on Earth Day.

Ethome, one of your best yet. Tells it like it is, with a fierce force of sadness.

I think it's just brilliant the way you set this whole thing up...pulling the reader in with beautiful spring imagery...delivering your ideas with point blank accuracy...then, stepping back to have the reader reflect on the future and consequences...very well written and executed.
