The Poem

Dear Poet, I’m writing this letter to you
For you are the one to make wishes come true
I ask just one favor and humbly plead
That you will have patience to honor my need

The one that I love is a dear friend of mine
But my feelings of friendship are crossing the line
My love’s turned to passion, my joy into lust
How can I explain this without losing trust

Dear Poet, please help me to somehow amend
A cherished esteem without losing a friend
For if I approach him with what’s in my heart
I fear that our friendship will be torn apart

Please write me a poem to place in his hand
And I’ll walk away so that he’ll understand
He’ll read your sweet verses and know that the end
Of a friendship does not mean he’s losing a friend

Dear poet, it’s over, I’m going away
I’ve already purchased my fare to L.A.
I wonder if he will remember this day
When he let the love of his life slip away

Dear Poet, your verses are breaking my heart
How could you have known it was you from the start
And now you have pleaded for me not to part
For you were too timid to open your heart

Your verse is a promise, a vow of true love
A ballad of splendor, the song of a dove
Affection so tender I never had guessed
The hidden desires that you have confessed

Dear poet, I love you, and will to the end
For now we can love without losing a friend
Oh, how you have answered my innocent plea
Thank you for writing this poem for me

What a wonderful read Elizabeth ... this is so lovely. All it would take would be the reading of the heart within these lines you've penned ... no further poems or words would be required. Such an amazing and emotion-filled poem Liz ... excellent writing, you had me gripped from beginning to end ... I just loved this!

Best wishes and hugs,
/Kit

This is so moving and beautiful. Your words had me so sad that she would not have her love. Then I felt the surge of happiness that she wins a lover and keeps her friend.

Such a beautiful poem of love and all that goes with it. Your words in this hold the true meaning of what love should feel like and your talent as a poet expresses them perfectly. I agree with PdV......this one should be published because it is screaming for a chance to sooth a whole world of hearts out there. Superb penning in all respects.

Thank you all so very much for your lovely comments to this poem. It is not true for me, of course, but as Mark said, there are a lot of friendships that turn romantic and many among poets.(so I've heard)
