My Father read "The Walrus and the Carpenter" to me when I was a child and it remains a favorite of mine. My apologies to those who are not familiar with the references. To those who are, I hope you can enjoy this. David2 An Homage A funny thought occurred to me today, If pigs had wings would they be ‘fraid to fly? And what of Kings and cabbages, you say? I really think I’d rather not know why, He chose to pair those two from all the rest, Or what he thought about his shoes and ships. Now sealing wax looks funny when it’s pressed, But seas aren’t boiling hot as He did quip. When Alice wandered through the looking glass, Do you really think she did it on her own? Although I’ve tried I can’t through mirrors pass, And Wonderland remains the great unknown. Of all the oddities that Alice spies, The Carpenter and Walrus take the prize. |

The time has come the Walrus said to speak of many things Of shoes and ships and sealing wax and cabbages and kings and whether the sea is boing hot and whether pigs have wings But wait awhile the oysters cried before we have our chat for most of us are out of breath and all of us are fat No hurry said the carpenter, they thanked him much for that. |

I enjoyed this (and also enjoy Carroll's poetry, thanks to ethome for the quotation.) I can't think of a reason to pair cabbages and kings, either, except for the alliteration, and the absurdity. And I have to agree that the looking glasses in my house are not easily passed through. Thanks for the nice change of pace. "And Wonderland remains the great unknown." A wonderful tribute, and this line is most instrumental in summarizing the "why," to my way of thinking. It is the unknown to which we are drawn through his images and ideas. He takes us out of our ordinary, our dull comfort, our stuffy grown up-ness, into a world of whimsy, of childhood, of dreams and magic. A world away. And we go, most willingly. Lovely, lovely poem. Thank you for it. Claire Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?......Henry David Thoreau |

Good on ya, David2! Here's one I wrote back in 97...hope you like. Carolingian "Twas brillig" I heard the Momerath say Deep in his chamber pot "The Jabberwock has run away And stole the Tumtum's plot" So to the warbling stream I sped The Borogrove to meet I saw not his noisome head But I saw his feet The Walrus gaily ambled up I heard him slightly sway By the butter I knew he supped On oyster by the bay What a cruel and vicious sot Shells for all the world to see But as I patted down my smock Thought "Better them than me" Alicat |
