People our age Are never without luggage Usually a few steamer trunks Rarely just a backpack Or a valise So - we came together Caught off guard Sparks flew Dull embers glowed A fire blazed In the early twilight And in the long sweet intervals Through the night Baggage was unpacked We never looked away None of the cluttered Dreams now ashes None of the discarded Furniture, curtains Garments now out of fashion Were ignored But neither did any Raise a brow Or cause a frown Still the sands fell Fires ebbed and flowed Dawn pierced The eastern sky And we faced our overnight bags The ones always with us The current The permanent And as we parted We faced our Trespass And we wondered What would endure The new love Or the old Commitment Or both... Great souls have wills; feeble ones have only wishes. ~ Chinese Proverb ~ |

I too have written pieces about old tapes, otherwise called "baggage"...have a friend who said "quit playing the old tapes...." and it made a lot of sense... as does this! Well done, Sir! |

What a tale can be read from these lines...and between them... (could be a full-blown novel, *g*). Great write, glad I found it! Lary |

Can relate to this one. Think we all have a story in our unpacked bags... Good poem. Deb |

Wilfred~ I happen to think this is just lovely. 'So - we came together Caught off guard Sparks flew Dull embers glowed A fire blazed In the early twilight' Oh, yes ! So very lovely are the sparks that leap to flame. I REALLY like it ! ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Constructive Critique: change those first three words!!! Just kidding, Wilfred, we're only 18 right? "I walked beside the evening sea and dreamed a dream that could not be." George William Curtis |

I know we all carry this type of baggage around...Id sort of like to think it helps make me a better person...one more able to love and be loved by someone willing to check the bags at the door...but hey what do I know? |
