Less Than Needed We were having cocktails, on the veranda, chewing our cud, talkin' old times, hell, man, we were enjoying ourselves, when She walked in. Prim, proper, prissy and pretty as I'd ever seen her; that's right, the memory from my past, the one I hated to love, loved to hate, and wished would drop out of the storage bank of my brain; you know... leave me alone, go away, damn! Do anything but bother me. I ignored her; from the corner of my eye, following her every movement, the way she seemed to attract every molecule of light, the way everyone seemed to sit a little taller, straighten their clothes, wipe the water rings off their tables; the way she smiled flashing those perfect, white teeth… I ignored her; chug-a-lugged my drink, waved for the waiter, choked when she glanced my way, drank my buddy's beer. Later, still ignoring her from the corner of my eye, she whom I adored more than life, whom gave me her all, whom I walked out on, back to my dirty t-shirts, torn jeans, worn-out tennis shoes, multiple beers, hang-on friends and pissant ways... Later, she sent me a note. "I still love you", it said. I ignored her from the back of my head, chug-a-lugged my beer, several more... she deserved so much more than me; my god, what a way to spend Thanksgiving Day. So I went home, ignoring her until she left, died when she touched my shoulder in passing, clung to the comments from round the table... "Hang in there, buddy…hold tight man...don't let her see you hurt...," and almost ripped off a head that said "*****!", and pasted her note along with all the others on the glass in the frame that held her picture on the table next to my bed. Almost died, but didn't, couldn't; haven't suffered enough yet. Haven't paid for the hurt I've caused. Haven't atonned for injuring an Angel. I ignored her picture smiling lovingly at me; with tears blurring the image, I swallowed more beer, burped, "I love you too," I said. w. james beard, jr. © November, 2000 [This message has been edited by jwesley (edited 11-26-2000).] |

Thanks Paula, again, not me...but I did pass the word (same thing I've been saying to this person), just writing from his perspective. |

JWesley~ Outstanding!! It's not always easy to write from another's perspecive, but you've done a wonderful job here. You made me cry, wishing he wasn't such a fool, and that he would just accept her love and give it back. Excellent poem. -SEA |

jwesley--this is very real and well done...with all the feeling of a scene played out. Might make a good short story. |
