Everyday Wear New china decorates the table.. Antique silver polished until it glistens Laughing about how we thought Mom would polish the shine right off. Crystal Italian wine goblets, my favorite part of the table, on top of my favorite Great Aunt's linen and lace table cloth. Men draped from one end of the living room to the other, with the sounds of grunts and words better left unspoken bouncing off the walls The Matriarch of the family, Mom moves with the grace of a feline, smooth and silent within her domain, everything choreographed down to the last minute. I stirred and chopped, baked pies, and washed the onion from my hands three times Happily chased all the kids and made turkey's out of styrofoam cups so we could bowl with the squash Smiles and giggles filled the yard as another "strike" is counted and I pause to remember, it's the small things like a child's laugher, we should be thankful for. The table is set with every day plates and silverware, plastic cups with Disney characters...not forgetting the straws ... paper napkins and phone book booster for the smallest I took my seat at the New china table while watching the actions of the every day table, I listened to the conversation as it ran full course from politics to child care to wives who are now the "ex" and how the table has an uneven number One of us is without a partner, and that seems to be a topic of importance There's more to this day that they just don't get, and frankly I've had my fill The turkey is juicy, the potatoes fluffy and the rolls didn't get burned ... but somehow nothing has a taste There is laughter and chuckles and milk through the nose when a joke was told and when I said grace, I saw the hands hold And for a moment, just for today I wanted to be small and sit at the table with the Everyday wear. 11/23/00 |

You've painted a vivid picture of family life ,with a streak of poignancy running throughout.Another fine piece. 'Humankind cannot bear too much reality' T.S.Eliot |
