Pausing to Think

of the green tree and the briar
the ocean's rushing flavor
the quiet pond and river's song
the mountain climb I savor

The voices distance still recalls
the lives that touch my essence
the fairy dust that round me twirls
to magic smile of strangers

of the grandmother who held my hand
who made the lemonade
and whistled bird songs to the sky
with answer's serenade

of the freckled lift of father
who took me to the sea
and drenched me in salt water’s swirl
though gone he still holds me

of mother tender hearted
whose wisdom smiled me open
to find the best in those around
her spirit still helps coping

of my precious little girl
who twirled into my being
a treasure held within her palm
still open for my seeing

the love of friends who understand
and fold me in their comfort
who see the beauty time has woven
and tell me how they love it

of time that marches with my sons
now gown and filled with living
who with their seasons blessed by love
their own roads are beginning

The loving touch of a good man
the sound of music playing
the poetry that speaks for me
and ears that hear my praying

of many blessings of the moon
and sunsets touched with golden
the lessons of days gone before
that in my heart I’m holding

The who and what you think about says a lot about how you came to be such a remarkable woman. *S* This is lovely, Martie.

Oh Martie this is so uplifting and wonderful..
with each verse my smile grew wider upon my face...
this is contentment put to rhyme...
such a perfect poem to read on a day meant to ponder and reflect all that we are grateful for...
poetry like this being on my list..
and your friendship as well.

Oh, Martie, this is truly lovely.  No wonder you are such a loving lady!  But not only were you given love - you were able to take it, and internalize it, and give it back again and again the rest of your life!  That's a gift!

I was especially touched by the verse:
"of the freckled lift of father
who took me to the sea
and drenched me in salt water’s swirl
though gone he still holds me"

Excellent poem, my friend!
