Listening to every heart

The Visitor

in my woods
there is a corner
~ a copse ~
where all is quiet
no matter the time
of day

with the exception
of an owl in flight
in the lee of night
or a hawk on high
in the day of sky
or the wind that sighs

and it is here
in these woods
beneath the naked trees
I sit
quietly
and wait for the eye
that would behold me

the bearer of the eye
that should
beware my smile
shall wear a coat
of tawny sheen
his eye shall bear
a golden gleam

quiet, in muffled silence
I
draw to my lungs
a shallow breath
lest I sigh, too,
too obtrusive
and my proximity give
away

for I would view
my visitor
I would catch his eye ~
a puissant challenge, he
suffers few in his
presence
such is his powerful essence

a crackle of leaf
draws courtesy of my gaze
as a brown squirrel
runs his maze
across the branch of
the elderberry
making lively, making
merry

still I await the non-sound
as the woods become subdued
before magnificence
comes on crafted limb
and all other bestial beings
grow silent in
his propinquity

as he enters the copse
and takes up my soul
in the depth of his golden eye
I can only take up
his imagery in
the eye of my
camera

and he looks direct
at me
and
the shutter shudders

and only one of us
is the better for the
spell he shall leave behind

A wonderful fantasy, beautifully written, cool and green and haunting.

Love the flavor, love the feel of this one.  It carries one through a garden of images and sensations.

Sunshine,
Nice picture in your woods.  I was there, in anticipation!

You cast a spell with your words in this one.  I read it twice to make sure I caught it all but I will be going back as I am still not convinced that I did.......but I will my friend.  This was a magnificant piece you have penned and I know that I have said that before but I truely mean it.  I was captivated from the title on down and still am.

I saw a buck, big and bold and beautiful, yours did indeed weave a spellbinding tale, enjoyed it much.

I especially liked that the species not revealed - choice of words too - as magical as the poet - (I need a bit more propinquity ~S~)

SEA...so long since we've met...welcome home...and yes, dear...always a new perspective through the lens...

Corinne...no fantasy...I have the copse, the camera, and the image...

Virginia, I am so very glad you "felt" it...a wonderful compliment, thank you...

'Deer...that, Sir...was the intent, and I am glad you allowed yourself to be transported...

Krawdad, isn't anticipation a wondrous feeling?...thank you...

Mark, never for a moment do none of us believe that you don't mean what you say...if I wove a spell, that was my intent...for the copse is magical, as are the surroundings of these blue walls...thank you...

dragonpoe...I am so very glad for what you saw, thank you...

Poeminister...thank you for allowing yourself into this piece all of the way, and for the honor of gracing your library...

Mr. Yeats...your kind words show me what I myself missed...for yes indeed I had a specific animal in mind...but that it was not named lent a little more mystery to the piece, as you have pointed out...thank you for your insightful readings...

Paula, let me know the time you plan to arrive...I'll be here...we will visit the copse together...

Thank you Wynter...

Yes, Marsha, you always do...and I count on it...thank you!...

I couldn't help but think of my boss as I read this (after enduring the boss from hell, I finally have a great one. *S*) She goes to wildlife refuges on weekends trying to be still enough to persuade the residents she is harmless with her camera... only to be foiled many times by noisy people (who probably go home wondering why they never see any animals! LOL)

Thank you for sharing, Suthern...when the right visitor comes and we have the perfect moment, sometimes the "click" is enough to scare them off...

I can understand your employer's frustrations!

Sounds like a wonderful escape there in your own private thicket so close to nature where you can observe that busy little creature on his own home grounds.   Great write!
