As daylight gasps ever shorter breaths, And the birds have swarmed to warmer climes, I'm caught in amber, a state of frozen regret, Silently passive in the slipstream of time. The air hangs with tension unrelieved, And bitterness has struck the bracken bare, Our decay measured by the autumn leaves, As they turned to the colour of despair. This season of melancholy has numbed my senses, All beauty blackened, cankered by my deeds, Love endures little against its frail defences, A flower that can only blossom far from weeds. All seems lifeless and sombre, since you have gone, The legacy of carefree, foolish days, When I succumbed to the sweet siren's song, The time worn trap of the tempter's gaze. What force compels men to mire themselves in shame, To fall from grace, as if it were their duty, So few who can pull their fingers from the flame, For all men are servile slaves of beauty. Not heaven, but here, must we be redeemed from lust, Let the chaste knight replace the fallen ,wounded king, Now diadem and sceptre are infected with rust, And eviscerate lands will flourish in the spring. Though without your presence, verdure goes unseen, Lacking the life-giving essence your spirit lends, One day, you must return to your demesne, Only then can I be sure this winter will end. Now withered dreams have fallen to the ground, And the boughs shake as the wind whispers your name, That desolate howl, there is no such haunting sound, May it bring you back to me again. This should be required reading for everyone contemplating ditching their integrity for a moment's pleasure... believing regrets won't ruin everything. *S* Great poem! |
