Listening to every heart

The Reader

Fragonard portrayed this sweet young maid
as she absorbed her favorite lines
perhaps it was the words of John Gay,
of "Black Eyed Susan" who prayed
"O Where shall I my true-love find…"
yes, perhaps these words were on her mind.

Gaze upon this her winsome face
solemn sure and fair with grace
and Fragonard's heart must have heard
her utter a line or two, a word
of Pope's "The Poet's Friend, " impassioned,
who spoke of the muse and of man's low passions

What thoughts went on in that young girl's mind,
were the words of Herrick's "Julia" there entwined
and did she believe that if she wore the clothes
that silkened sweet Julia's repose
would Fragonard see in her the glittering
or did she quell a silent tittering…

However long Fragonard kept her still
she had her book to read at will
to calm her soul with Marlow's poem
of the "Shepherd" in her warm home
to dream of one who would ask for her hand
and imagine just that type of man.

'Tis no wonder then, this sweet look of her
to sit, and read, till twilight will surely
come, then ebb into the night to dream ~
pity Fragonard didn't grasp moonbeam's
kiss upon her face so delightfully fair
pity Fragonard's brush didn't kiss the air.

Karilea...I do love the great "romantics"--
and what a tribute you have penned...more familiar with Herrick and Donne...and after I tell ya how much I love this? Please feel free to send me any links you think I may find helpful or entertaining...

You are a most graceful poet...I do think you DO write with a quill---lovely, lovely, LOVELY!!!!

sunshine, you make me believe in reincarnation! You write these in such a way one swears that an ancestor from your past came from your soul to take pen in hand...beautiful..

What a wonderfully classic style you express here.  This took quite a bit of thought and some research.  Very nice work.

Kari love, this is beauty personified, utterly stunning. As inevitable as the sun is in the sky, that the moon orbits the earth, you write beauty like no other can. If I could give you a gift Kari love, it would be to see your soul and see the beauty within. It shines as bright as you do love. And that is why you are who and what you are.
Take care kid

Take back the hope you gave,- I claim
Only a memory of the same
