CHITWOOD
Virginia Salter

quiet highway
weaving along the Yaquina River
nestled between hill and dale
fast, slow
almost spinning in autumn

sparkling sunbeams
filtered by deciduous and pine
glisten off amber and coffee leaves
as Yaquina flows silently
outside window glass
and tires’ hums

rounding a bend
a red-stained structure
grabs our minds, hearts with nostalgic strokes
calls us back
to spend a few moments
marveling, taking in the awesome span of time and of the river

leaves rustle
in the breeze,
interrupted only by cars
that whiz past, almost rock us off our feet
and we smiling ear to ear
beside ourselves with joy
that we stopped to tarry,
to steal a piece of the peace
of yesteryear
at Chitwood covered bridge

Viriginia, was a lovely mixture of rustic and modern.

I did?  Oh, cuz your name is Sunshine?  I'm glad you liked it.  Or was it cuz it's the Yaquina River?
