Her Flame by John Romstadt I Despair Gone, the scarlet September days, as ocher lays the hills and time's cruel hand moves me toward troubled reality and dreams are all I know to keep me from losing my mind. In dream's soothsay she leaves me breathless; for I am lost in despair's abyss, gazing into the darkness of a time, where nevers last forever. My verse subdued, once painted in passion by fantasies never touched, now echo off walls of cold stone and fade to lost whispers. Yet, her name speaks the magnificence of her beauty and to speak the word does not touch the beauty of the light behind her eyes. Eyes, like fires in the night ever burning, burning ever into my heart. Though the darkness in the shadows dance for the flicker of her flame and this dream, just fades with dawn; while memories seep through my veins, with the cold of loneliness that lays, like the haze of the morning fog. II Dream Upon the Damask linen she lie. Her hair, burnished waves of reflection in ambient light, dimmed to candle glow, by the veil of darkness. She lie, a faded bloom with light infusing her blush. My gaze to her eyes, Damned by the depth of her flame. I am lost; searching for something unreachable; yet, my hand lies so close. Her lips painted rose pass mine, tormenting... I long for their taste. Her attar hangs in the air, like the burning of dew upon the lamp. I breathe in her light, her beauty; Like ambrosia, her fervent kiss brings life to this mortal clay. My hand's fervid touch, like the brush of the artist's feathered stroke, paints passion with each loving caress and her flame is soothed beneath this artist's loving hand. III Reality I lie awake and hear the slow hours strike, feel blood flow through each bulging vein, while in my heart there stirs this quiet pain, that none but she will ever know the like. But why for all my passion's torrent spent, have half heard whispers struck the ear of night and fear that brought my troubled mind to flight, make the eyes of day weep in discontent. The battle rages within. The night fills with endless sighs, for I have kissed the rose and seen blood drip from her silver thorns. I have tasted the salt of tears drowning in love's debris and heard the voice of sin ringing in my ears. Let me drink from the waters of Lethe and let my memories on the winds of AElus be scattered. Let death be my release from pain, if love is to be the curse bringing to my ears the whisper of her voice as only an echo of the past. Yet; from out of the depths of deepest despair I would climb, if our dreams could but touch in flight, for just one more moment. |
