Sometimes in October the devil, disguised as wind, visits these hills peppered with eucalypti, redwoods, browned grass - parched, papery as grandma’s skin anticipating satan’s hot breath as whipped branches collide with current, lines dangle, sparking, arcing, fall’s hues obscured into one mass of grey. Sunday plans suddenly shift into adrenaline charged choices clouded by approaching smoke, hunger licks, dancing up vanishing trees. We move in manic motion Yet no match for el diablo, Leaving behind That which does not matter. © 2000 Corinne Bailey |

Corinne~ Yes, yes, yes ... you have written of the Santa Ana winds well. Too well ... I only experienced the arid touch of that phenomenon once .... and it was enough to write it's memory for the rest of time. These winds off the Mojave Desert can have such a devastatating effect. There is no escaping it ... it permeates your being. I would pray for relief and safety for all in it's path. Absolutely a great write, Corinne. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ noles1@totcon.com |

Ah, I recall going through a particular pass, through the tunnel...as we came out, the winds literally stopped the car in its tracks... there is nothing like the Santa Ana winds... Karilea If I whisper, will you listen?...KRJ |

Thank you, Daniel. This fire occured last weekend at a friend's house east of the Oakland Hills in California. We are quickly reminded of how fast a fire can move in 40 MPH gusts, and of what does matter in life. Corinne |

Corinne--we had those winds down south too..and sparked a fire in the valley...but the other side I see from where I live is wonderfully clear skies and no smog ...I find them exillerating, but they can also cause alot of problems... Great poem! |

Thanks, Martie! Yes, this is that time of year in both Northern and Southern Cali. Scary to be that close to the damage it can cause, though. Corinne |

Park, you are TOO MUCH! Yes, a dry, hot wind that shoots right into your sinus cavaties and dries up every drop of moisture in your body and makes your hair feel like sandpaper and and, well you get the point! And thanks! Work, work and no play. Corinne |
