These hands of mine. They’ve been with me forever. First time I saw them. So small, so pink, Tried to eat them. Held my first toy. Held the hand of my mother, Reached for my father. Stopped my first fall. Helped me push back to my feet again. Felt the pain of a flame, Some ice soothed them. Petted my first dog. Got scratched by my first cat. They caught my first ball, Threw that ball back. Held my first girl. They tried to explore her, Got slapped by one too. They steered my first car, Still give gestures to rude drivers. These hands paint and draw. These hands hold the pen when I write. These hands planted a garden, And pulled out weeds. These hands reach out to give help. These hands still reach out for help. They grasp another for hello, And then wave goodbye. These hands hold my love. They caress her, protect her. These hands protect me. Got scars on my knuckles prove it. These wonderful hands. Been with me forever. |
