A poem is a parent's love, ...blue skies above, A journey on a path not taken, ...a faith unshaken. The odist writes of loves once spurned, ...a lesson learned, Of death's harsh sting; the verdant spring, ...as robins sing. The poet writes of thee and thou, ...a purple cow, Of pain and suffering; hope and joy, ...a child's new toy. Of all these things does poet pen, ...forever then, Within are hearts does poet bring, ...true wonderous thing, For poetry's life's photograph, ...a shepherd's staff, As poet pens of she herself; ...gives of himself, A poem is... A Sonnet Is... What music this that stirs the soul, With thoughts sublime from gods above? A tender word on heart inscroll, Sweet memories of life and love, As nightingale in evening sings, Soft melodies touch deep within, And free the heart on feathered wings, To rise above our daily din. A soothing balm, one's pain it frees, Love's madrigal from goddess lips, As gentle wind on satin seas, Doth fill the sails of passion ships, What creature this? What magic dear? "Tis sonnets voice, that thou dost hear. [This message has been edited by Mike (edited 04-23-2000).] |

This is excellent, Mike. Only because I know you are a man who prefers to do things in the correct manner, allow me to say that sonnets are made of lines of five-feet iambic verse ( 10 syllables) which in no way detracts from the excellence of your writing here. |

Mike - very well-written and expressed! I am not savvy enough about form to know that the lines of sonnets should be 10 syllables, each - but I certainly enjoyed the rhythm, the flow, and the lovely, descriptive verse! So, I give both the poem and the sonnet two big THUMBS UP! BTW, has David2 seen this? He'd love it! ![]() Troy Beautiful, Thought-Provoking Poetry http://www.h-systems.net/p1.htm |

What music this that stirs within mine soul, With thoughts sublime, from gods on clouds above? A tender word, that doth on heart inscroll, Brings forth sweet memories of life and love, As nightingale, on wing in evening sings, Soft melodies, that touch mine soul within, And free the heart, to fly on feathered wings, To rise above, to calm our daily din, A soothing balm, one's pain in comfort frees, Love's madrigal, flows forth from goddess lips, As gentle wind, upon life's satin seas, Doth fill with grace, the sails of passion ships, What creature this? What magic to hold dear? 'Tis sonnet's voice, that in mine heart doth hear. |

Your thoughts are, quite obviously, poetry before ever they grace the page. Beautiful writing, beautiful thought...thank you, Mike. ~ Claire Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?......Henry David Thoreau |

Let's not forget poetic license here. Mike you can write a sonnet in however many syllables you want, dear, and it will sound just as sweet. But both are wonderful. And I see my purple cow was included here. Quite an honor, I must say! Both poems are fantastic ( all three) Liz |

Thank you all ever so much for the gracious comments. As some of you are aware, I started writing poetry last year after the mother of a close friend passed away. Somehow, I have seemed to have caught this poetry bug I can't seem to shake... |
