The Tomboy Tree It was a great tree, that pepper tree… well, not really a pepper tree, but it had these terrific little hard black berries that hung from its branches… sure looked like black peppercorns. And it had the best branches, excellent for climbing and getting up high, hiding, safe and secure behind the drooping limbs higher up, with long tendrils of green leaves tickling my ears. I could be up in the tree before Mom could see me behind the trunk calling me to come to lunch, or perhaps dinner, and I would pretend I could not hear her even tho I knew I was courting disciplined trouble as she had this not so great paddle and was never hesitant to use it. but to leave the tree? No, tomboy me, I needed to climb and climb to reach the stars and the sunshine in night or day to get away from the changes of womanhood encroaching to remain a tomboy just one more moment longer. 8 May, 2000 ©KRJ Sunshine Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |

Ah, take me back to the innocense of youth. This is a remarkable poem, Sunshine. About how things "used" to be... before reality calls. What happens to that passion we used to possess I wonder, that need to climb and climb and climb... What cause us to just set down one day and never look up anymore... Sorry for babbling... this really moved me, though. Michael |

Sunshine~ This was GREAT ! I grew up climbing trees just to show my brothers I could climb higher than they could. I still get those irrestible urges .. and I give in to them and can still shinny up a good old magnolia with the best of 'em. The old spreading, gnarly oaks are good climbers too. But my favorite climbing tree is the camphor. The brances are springy and make for a great way to 'rock' away an afternoon. Thank you for a precious memory-stirrer ! ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

I was a Tomboy too and used to find every excuse to be outside or up a tree or in the mountains, or soaking wet, or muddy or anything just not to be inside all those long summer days What fun, thanks for reminding me.. ~X~ |

Awww.. this was absolutely GR8! I could almost feel the breeze blowing through the branches of that tree. I was never a "tomboy," but this piece surely took me into the playfulness of that mindset. Wonderful! Catchy title as well. |
