Heartstrings We dined in waist-high meadow grass And watched an eagle make a pass Above our heads, As though to spy Upon these strangers, you and I. The lunch we'd packed to bring along, You fed to me with bursts of song. We'd wandered on the dunes all day And watched the ocean's tidal sway. We'd walked the beaches and I found A piece of sea-glass, smooth and round. It was the color of the sky. I picked up several shells nearby. We finally climbed the cliffs to see A meadow stretch invitingly, With flowers mingled in between The hardy types of grasses seen. We lingered there until the light Began to fade and racing night, We hurried down a shadowed lane to reach our cottage once again, Where firelight soon warmed the space And played like fingers on your face.
