A Prairie Vagabond In a humble, one roomed soddy, My childhood days I knew, Where I learned to love the prairie And mornings fresh with dew. How the birds would dart and warble In morning's pearly light. They filled the air with beauty, In song and in their flight And I learned to ride the ponies, Like Indian children do. Horizons always beckoned me To come explore the view. I loved those days of wandering. The memories are fond. A part of me will always be A prairie vagabond. Betty Lou Hebert "soddy" is a slang expression for sod house. The pioneers made their houses out of blocks of sod on the prairie.
