Bayou Country Lotus blossoms, palely blooming, Where the swamp and marshland meet. Mourning doves are calling sadly. Haunted voices, soft and sweet. Here the twisted, bony cypress Raises gray and knobby knees. Here the graceful willow dances. Here the lush acacia trees. Torpid heat, uneasy silence And the shadowed waterways, Form a maze of tangled swampland. Endless channels, countless bays. Water hyacinth and iris, Red-winged blackbirds flit and trill. Sudden sunsets, trailing mosses. Foggy mornings, hushed and still. Here, blue heron guard the shallows And the great, white egret dwells. Bird song drifting o'er the marshes, Casts mysterious, bayou spells! Oh, Betty; The flow and grace are exquisite! I have to tell you that you have captured the whole scene perfectly. I know first hand because my father is a cadjun, thus "LeJeune" is my maiden name. He is from New Iberia and I spent many summers there..Love, Ellie A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails. |

ellie: Your comments are so reassuring to me, as I have never been in the south where you find bayous. I read a photographic book about the area and also watched a video tape and it really captivated me. I hoped I was able to bring it to life in my poem and it's nice to know that you think I did. Your background is very interesting. I've always thought Le Jeune was so pretty and my daughter is also named Ellie, so I'm partial to that. Thanks! Betty Lou Hebert |

I am amazed at how you absorb what you see and rad and then write about it so beautifully. Love, Joyce |

BettyLou~ 'Here the twisted, bony cypress Raises gray and knobby knees.' As you are aware, my friend ... I live in the Green Swamp of Florida ... the cypress rises out of the water and those 'knobby knees' are now a protected species~ The trees are majestically draped in Spanish moss that blows in the wind~ It creates a stunning piece of scenery~ Thank you for the stunning imagery of this piece~ *Hugs* ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

Marge: I did think of you when I posted this one, knowing you live in Florida and at Green Swamp. I hoped it would seem realistic to you, and others in the south, as I have never actually seen a bayou! Thanks for all your comments. Betty Lou Hebert |
