My Dried Bouquet Along the lake the cattails grow In shallow water and they show Brown, velvet flowers, dense and thick, Upon a tall and woody stick That is the stem. The green leaves rise Like long swords pointing at the skies. I have a milk can by my door. I like to gather three or four With other drying plants to make A fall display. I always take Some teasels too and spikes of wheat. Some sprays of rosehips then complete My dried bouquet and it will last Long after winter storms are passed. Sometimes I keep it through the year Until another autumn's here.t size> Betty Lou Hebert Will be published in "Along the Path" 2001 [This message has been edited by Trillium (edited 10-29-2001).] |

This has such a warm homey feel ....Lovely, Betty.. A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails. |

Thanks Joyce. That's one of the pleasures of the fall, gathering dried materials and cattails for a bouquet. Betty Lou Hebert |

Soaring Eagle: Good to see your remarks! Thanks. I don't know where I would find any sweet grass around here! Maybe I need to delve into that. Betty Lou Hebert |

Sol: I'm glad you liked the poem, Thanks. Teasels are a twll plant that's found in moist places. They love ditches and boggy areas. The can grow as high as 7', but are usually 1-1/2 to 4' tall. There are prickles on the stem and also on the oval heads at the top. The heads are around 2" in diameter. Very prickly and in the flowering season have small purple flowers all over them. There are usually about four or five bracts with a flower head on each plant. When they dry they are an amber color all over and make a handsome addition to a dry bouquet. Just wear gloves when you handle them I know they grow in the Cascade and Sierra mountains and environs but not sure if they grow anywhere else. How's that for a botany lesson?? Betty Lou Hebert |
