 Heeeeeeere I come, to save the day! I can see through walls, I can breathe out fire! When I feel mighty wired, I can pick out a liar. Up against the wall, I'm the invisible dawn, and I will never get tired as I sing revolution songs! Photograph a snap of the celebrations held every year in Barcelona, to mark the Catalan National Day, on Sept.11th, the day Catalunya lost the Civil War to Spain. The festival takes place all over The North, and mainly to commemorate the people who fought and died for National Freedom. The poem is written for them, and everyone else struggling against Oppression. |

Thanks Marge, and Mysteria! here's another from the day, last year.  Oops-health and safety...har har, we're on The Continent! What excites me, is the determination to celebrate the effort, regardless. Living in Barcelona has taught me to appreciate the realness of things, and the pride of community. Originally, I'm Scottish, Polish descent, and have lived most of my adult life in London. I always poo-pooed the Scottish and Polish effort against Oppression, mainly because it's played down. Here, in Catalunya, people bang pots and pans, and old ladies, sitting on the pavement, make paper flowers, to commemorate the people who have fought and died for their rights. I liked London for the same reasons; there are always marches, and gatherings happening to show something. Growing up in Scotland, I always wondered why nobody PROTESTED against the outside governmental implementations. It's no good to just take it. Barcelona's an honourable place...highlighted by the council sending out pamphlets before the national day, reminding everyone to wear non-flammable head-gear, and please, could the teenagers keep the harrassment of la bombas down to a minimum? |

Thanks Midnitesun. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. The fireworks are set off amongst the crowds, on the street. My 10 year old burst into tears when the first cannons went off, but he ended up enjoying it once he felt he was at a safe distance. It's almost a rite of passage for the teenagers to dance amongst the fire-monsters...the sticks you see held up in the 1st photo are used to jab the young ones back-it's very dramatic, and passionate. It's not just the young ones that are close, though. I can't get over how old people are so involved with the community, and how unperturbed they are at the antics of the youth. Viva La Tolerence! |

LOL, and it's that very tolerance and acceptance that spirit of namaste that must somehow prevail worldwide if we are ever to achieve peace on earth Thank you very much for sharing these pics! My teenager works with the white Lipizzan horses, and with her digital camera, she captures the essence of equines. Sara has often talked of someday visitng Spain and Portugal, and will no doubt enjoy seeing these photos and reading these comments. Vive! |

You're welcome, Midnitesun. Your teenager would love it here, as would you. It's not only a place that holds people in high regard, Spain loves animals, too. There are days set aside for the equstrians to take over the streets, and the traffic has to wait while people on horses ride through the cities, parping horns. Also, on Jan6th, it's 3 Kings Day, and the Kings alight from a ship in the harbour, then ride through the streets, throwing sweets from saddle-bags, to the children gathered for them. |

Thanks Joyce and Trillium. Living here has widened my horizons. There's been lots of occasions when I've walked out my front door, to find dragons and papier mache demons parading about, for no apparent reason. On asking, I realize that there are cultural and religous festivals that a lot of the western world has forgotten. Here, maybe because the country has had such a mixed-up history, they celebrate everything, perhaps to find peace with the past? ...and Joyce, as I've said before-health and safety is alien to The Catalans. The government expects you to stay away from danger yourself, I think. Even the road-works are not enclosed with barriers-I've almost fallen down holes many times, and the traffic-does nobody understand what a red light means? |

Thanks, Bill! I'm glad you enjoyed it. You'll know, that when a people have been oppressed, it becomes very important to express freedom. People here can still remember their menfolk being dragged onto the street and shot-shocking, considering how Europe is supposed to be a bastion of human rights-perhaps that's why? |
