On the edge of an abyss

0 posted 2006-05-15 03:30 AM

My husband is a sportsman
from his head down to his toes
The stuff he'll use to hide his scent
brings wrinkles to my nose!

He'll dress in green and paint his face
to camoflauge his self
Then he'll sit for many hours
on his little treetop shelf

How can hunters stand so still
as they await the perfect shot?
For to stand in place for hours on end
takes patience I ain't got

And tell me why would someone want
to put a cricket on a hook?
Or go to such great lengths to catch
a record catfish or chinook?

I've seen the average fisherman
wade in water to his knees
When the sky was overcast and gray
and it was thirty two degrees!

Please help me find the answer
to this question plaguing me
Is this really dedication
or pure stupidity?

Aw but I do detect that not so subtle hint of bliss
Sweetly expressive and great read!

I'm sure you'd get lots of arguments about this, both pro and con!

Hello, Alone In The Dark.

Haha! a delightful, image-packed romp into marital bliss, and it is bliss, by the warmth in your tone.

Plus, you've captured the simplicity of the sportsman very well with your stucture, and easy flow.

(Trillium brought up an interesting point-I'm quite into gender specific writing...what you've done here is quite rude, although loving. You've subjectified your husband, like you would consider your dog! As a woman, I'm giggling, yet I can't help think I'd be blah blahing about subjegation if it were a man's poem about his wife! Yet, on 3rd reading, you have used the words "hunter" and "someone", so I'll let it go, although to be perfect in my li'l opinion, I'd like to hear him, as well as see him.)

definitely one for the bothy. Thanks for the read.

I didn't mean to pick on men. I wrote this as ayoung bride for my husband to make him laugh. It worked. I THINK.

I love this poem, and it is very thought provoking to say the least. I am a woman, and I say it is dedication not stupidity. As you said in the poem you would not have patience to sit there waiting, that sure puts a twist on the saying "patience is a virtue, seldom found in women, never found in men" I never thought about the patience involved before, waiting for the hunt to be had, but it's true there is definately patience exisitng in the hunt. So I would have to ask now, is patience stupid or dedicated?

Alone in the dark,

Big Smiles. Although I do tend to favor the idea that for one to go through such extremes to be dedication, you've certainly provoked a most humorous perspective here. Your poem was a lot of fun to read and I enjoyed reading it very very much.

Thank you all for your comments. I'm glad everyone enjoyed it. As I said, it was written in fun, with love. I do believe it is dedication, not stupidity. It was a light hearted (maybe semi-jealous) attempt of writing about what I viewed as my competition! (I was barely 17, and just married)
