Fighting Back

Relentlessly the years go by.
Defensively I bravely try
to fight the ravages of time
as if it were an evil crime
to let the gray in dark hair show.

My beautician makes a brave attempt
to tidy up my poor unkempt
tresses that have grown so thin;
each day a task harder to win.
I should just act my age, I know.

But I am woman and I will
take every potion, cream or pill
that promises beauty from a jar
to cover every little mar
and other signs of aging slow.

You would not recognize this face
if you saw it without a trace
of makeup when I first awake;
and I don't even like to take
a look myself when age lines show.

So fie on you who'd ask my age.
To be so bold is an outrage.
Just let me have my bit of pride;
my year of birth is classified.
I'm giving age the old heave ho,
the lines and gray will have to go.

I"m sure you look fantastic without all of that stuff. I'm 20 and I rarely wear makeup, usually because I don't have the time :P

But you have every kind of beauty, so don't feel like you need those dyes and creams!

Thank you so much Marge.  I owe you a bundle. The name of the poem was appropriate wasn't it?  We had to fight to get this picture on.  Love, Joyce

Joyce dear Joyce,
You are a beauty my dear and if you want to use the creams and dye okay, but am totally sure that you would be just as lovely without all the drugstore stuff too. I gave up the makeup and dye this last birthday...whew what a relief. beauty is in the inside and you are the first to tell the rest of that.

Thanks Annie.  Actually I was striving for humor and I do use a good replenishing cream to give me some help with the birthdays but not too much else.  Love, Joyce

Oh Joyce, You look wonderful in your pic but you know what? You are even more wonderful than any potion or pill or even plastic surgery could make a body. Your heart shines in those beautiful eyes and age ???? well thats just a number. I know the feeling of getting older and finding another clump of grey hair ... but then I think I like it sometimes too : )
especially having more time to do the things I want to do, instead of the things I have to do ; )

Thanks June and I'm old enough that I still consider it a miracle that my picture and poem could be flashed across the seas so quickly.Thanks for your comments.  Love, Joyce

Dear Joyce

I won't ask how old you are, but you look lovely.  I'm sure you would look just as lovely without dyes and make-up.

I'm 50 years old and gray as!  I have only dyed my hair on special occasions (the last time was when my daughter got married in 2001).  Since then I have vowed never to get my hair dyed again as I have a sensitive scalp etc.  So I am going gray gracefully as God intended.

I followed in my mothers footsteps and started going gray from the age of 25 years old.

I've never liked make-up and I only put it on when the need arises.

A lovely poem!

Love Isobel xo

Hi Isobel you young thing.  You are younger than my youngest child.  She doesn't dye her hair nor does her sister and that's okay and my mother never cut nor colored her hair but my grandaughters have been every shade.  So I don't know where that leaves me but I figure if they can do it, I can too.  I never pierced my ears either until my youngest granddaughter had them at twelve or thirteen.  I figured if she could do it, I could do it. Actually we color it a nice soft brown and the sunlight always turns it back to the bright color I had as a young girl.  Love, Joyce

Dear Joyce:  I don't know what happened to my reply, but it has disappeared!  I did enjoy your (tongue in cheek) poem!  There are so many beauty products on the market now how would one know what to use, if so inclined?
