I thank Betty Lou (Trillium) for her guidance and patience in helping me out to 'meter' my poem and to decide on a title. Her suggestions were invaluable! A little bit about the poem: I visited my daughter in California in May and whilst there we went to Las Vegas (Nevada of course). In one of the motels they had this white tiger in a marble room, with a glass partition for viewing. By the way, I did not gamble!!! Now back to the poem! In the Garden of Man I saw a cat on my holiday, Its blue eyes turned and looked my way, Our eyes were fixed and I could see The anguish and the misery. Laying on a marble ground It never uttered a single sound And yet behind that glass confine I felt its soul reach out to mine. We both knew as we looked around Into the crowded room, we found, That fate had sealed the only track To the outside; no turning back! Seeking my gaze once again, Sorrow turning to disdain At hardened steps, no cave to hide. Of day and night controlled inside. For mans greed and ever senseless act Brought this beautiful white tiger cat To an existence without trees, No sun, no moon, no calming breeze. It closed its eyes; lowered its head, Defeat was found on that marble bed. In my own defeat I left it be To live its life out in imagery. I felt guilty as I left that room, Leaving it there in its glass tomb. Still in my heart I feel its pain, United, our souls cried out once again. I’m back home now across the sea. Those same blue eyes come to me. I know that in God’s garden home It’s free at last, it’s free to roam! By Elizabeth Singh (June 19th 2005) |

Dear Isobel, This is a haunting poem and i can see the tiger touched your heart. Our laws ahould forbd such captivity. Our zoos across the country do try to imitate the wild and give freedom to the animals but of course a tiger is a dangerous creature and once taken from the wild is hard to contain. Betty Lou is a dear and a great teacher. Love, JOyce |

Dear Isobel: A wonderful poem and so very touching. I can certainly understand your feelings, at seeing this beautiful creature confined to a glass cage. You have done a fine job with this poem! Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

Dear Joyce I agree with you whole heartedly! Wild animals should never be kept in any form of captivity! Yes, Betty Lou is a dear and a great teacher! She has taken me under her wing, so to speak and I am indebted to her! Love Isobel xo |
