Driftwood

Upon the precipice I stand,
Above the raging surf and sand.
The winds that shaped me didn't care
The ocean side of me is bare!
My branches all thrust out behind,
Assuming twisted shapes, I find.

I'm not the usual kind of tree,
But people still take snaps of me
And call me picturesque, bizarre.
I'm not alone, for others are
Sharing these high cliffs with me,
Like sentinels, above the sea.

Our roots are strong and grasp the rock,
Too far above to feel the shock
Of crashing waves that eat away
The land, but there will come a day
When I will tumble down into
The waiting water, lost from view.

And there, the currents tumble me,
To end my life lived as a tree
And toss me on the beach to stay
Until there'll come a summer day,
When someone sees this weathered shard
And gives me space within their yard!

You know along the coastal shores of British Columbia we have Arbutus trees, incredible things they are, that loose their bark rather than their leaves.  Their roots are as you described this driftwood, and they are embedded so deep into the rocks that they look to be falling over, but instead to me seem to be reaching with arms to the sea.

This was just lovely!

Dear Joyce:  I have collected my share of driftwood over the years and I was looking at a piece over the week-end and thinking of how it came to be.  Thanks!

Mysteria:  How nice to hear from you! I remember seeing Arbutus trees when I was in Vancouver and also on the Island.  I wasn't thinking of them when I wrote this, but thanks for bringing them to mind. They really are unusual!

Dear Nancy:  I'm the same way, as I always bring driftwood home.  Sometimes very small pieces,  which I have scattered everywhere on windowsills in the house. The pieces I really want would take a semi truck to move!
Thanks for reading!

Dear Betty Lou,

I remember as a teenager, finding pieces of driftwood that washed ashore. It amazed me how odd and unusual the shapes were. When in a creative mode, I would gather the smaller pieces of driftwood, and hot-glue tiny dried branches and artificial flowers to it. It made unique and beautiful centerpieces.

Love,
Patricia

Dear Patricia:  Your center pieces of driftwood sound very creative!  I use driftwood for yard decoration and enjoy each piece.  I don't get to the coast often enough!!

Dear Betty Lou

When one 'life' ends another begins!  Driftwood reminds me of Native American stories of 'Shape Shifters'!

A wonderful poem!

Love Isobel xo
