His burden is heavy yet he does not complain
He trudges on through the mist and the rain

The paths that he sees are not easy to choose
The turns and the twists deceive and confuse

This one or that one, which shall it be
The best ones are not so easy to see

Some are so painful, the mind can't conceive
The misery and anguish is hard to believe

A few are rewarding, and offer short pause
But never last long, he knows not the cause

Blindly, he travels, in mist and in rain
Losing one path, never to see it again

Finding another, hope filling his heart
Losing it quickly, again he must start

Life is not easy, of this he is sure
The tests are many, confusing, yet pure

Pure in their randomness, pure in their fate
He tries to grasp reason but, cannot relate

He trudges through pain, disillusion, despair
Searching for paths he knows must be there

No help will he find on this dark lonely road
He must go it alone, must carry the load

Life asks no quarter, and gives none you see
He is what he is, and that he must be

Today is tomorrow; and tomorrow today
The knowledge cuts deeply as he moves on his way

The cup must be drained, though bitter or sweet
The man trudges on, never missing a beat

What else can be done, what choice in the mix
His fate to endure, until crossing the styx

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

pegasus111:  A well written poem, but I must ask, did he never see a rainbow!
